Finally, something that’s good, inspiring, and unifying is coming out of 2020. And it could be the all-access ticket to fame you’ve been waiting for. Ready for your closeup? Okay, but here’s the catch – you have to film it yourself.
We know. Calm down, calm down, we are about to tell you how to get involved.
Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald have teamed up with YouTube Originals to bring this truly inspired idea to life that will document 2020’s series of unfortunate events, and the last fragments of normalcy we’ve somehow managed to cling to.
The documentary is called, Life In A Day, and all the people of the world will be filming it.

In 2020, history is being made every day.
Australian bushfires. Civil unrest in Hong Kong. A pandemic that took precious lives and changed the way we live. Protests in every corner of America — and around the world — to demand that Black Lives Matter.
But in the midst of these extraordinary events, everyday life still continues.
We share moments, music, and meals.
We dance. We laugh. We cry.
We love. We fear. We hope.
What if we captured all of it in a single day?
On Saturday, July 25, 2020, film your day and upload your footage and you may become part of a historic documentary – a time capsule of the year 2020.
Anyone can participate and submissions from all over the world will be woven together to create a feature film, produced by Ridley Scott, directed by Kevin Macdonald, filmed by you, and premiering at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.
Submissions open on July 25th and close on August 2nd.

Filming For The Life In A Day Global Documentary Starts On July 25, 2020
Get your tripods, stabilizers, shotgun mics, and ring lights together. This is the moment you have been training for and it’s only 3 days away (from the writing of this post).
Here’s what Mr. Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald would like to see from you on film day.
The concept of the documentary is “Life In A Day” and they mean that literally. Scott and Macdonald have made it as simplistic as the global documentary title.
You can film a day in your life, going to work, at home with the kids, doing what you normally do. Maybe your July 25th will be filled with obvious things to film like a wedding, birthday, or other special occasion. Everything on lockdown? That’s definitely part of what’s made 2020, 2020 – film it.
In addition to capturing the world around you, the filmmakers would also like you to answer the following questions with your submission:
- What do you love?
- What do you fear?
- What would you like to change? Either about the world, or your own life.
- What’s in your pocket?
How To Be Included in the Life In A Day Global Documentary
Remember, all of this will go together to create one massive Life In A Day global documentary. We strongly recommend making sure that what you film empowers your narrative.
Do yourself a favor and leave the editing to the pros, a/k/a Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald’s editing team. You’d be surprised what content creators can do with raw footage, and what they’ll choose to use.
It’s always best to give content creators more to work with, rather than cutting things so stringent that they can only ever be what you made them.
How much should you film? Your heart out.
Submissions will be accepted from July 25 – August 2 and the creators have asked for just one thing, “make it personal, share what matters to you. This is your film.”

How to Submit Your Life In A Day Footage
When you’ve got gold on July 25th you’ll have until August 3rd to upload it to the Life In A Day Global Documentary website. YouTube Originals will make it possible for participants to upload multiple files so that you can capture both long and short-form clips.
